Effects of simulated botanical extract treatments on development, survival, and feeding activity of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under controlled laboratory conditions

Abstract

Background: The increasing concern regarding environmental contamination and insect resistance associated with synthetic insecticides has stimulated interest in plant-derived bioactive compounds as environmentally compatible alternatives for insect pest management. Botanical extracts contain numerous secondary metabolites that may interfere with insect feeding, growth, and survival while reducing ecological risks.

Objective: This educational manuscript aimed to demonstrate the structure of a zoological and entomological research article by evaluating the simulated effects of three botanical extracts on larval survival, feeding inhibition, and developmental duration of Spodoptera litura under controlled laboratory conditions.

Method: A completely randomized laboratory design was simulated using four treatment groups comprising a control and three botanical extract treatments. Each treatment contained five replicates of twenty larvae. Simulated observations included larval mortality, leaf consumption, developmental duration, and pupal weight. Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc comparison were applied to the simulated dataset.

Results: The simulated analyses indicated progressive reductions in feeding activity and increases in larval mortality with increasing botanical activity. Treatment C exhibited the greatest reduction in leaf consumption and the highest mortality percentage. Developmental duration increased in treated groups relative to the untreated control, while pupal weight decreased correspondingly.

Conclusion: The simulated findings illustrate how botanical insecticides may influence insect development and feeding behaviour in laboratory bioassays. The manuscript serves exclusively as an educational example of scientific writing, data presentation, and manuscript organization.
